Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Ann Duke was born in 1851 in Chiddingfold, Surrey, England – the daughter of George Duke & Priscilla Prince. (See 161 Mrs P Duke)

Sarah emigrated to Otago with her family in 1872 on the May Queen.

She married William Henry Uttley, a contractor, in 1879. They had seven children, three of whom were stillborn and one who died in infancy.

William was declared bankrupt in 1888, not it appears due to incompetence in business, but apparently his 'habit' of losing large quantities of money en route to the bank.

When Sarah signed the suffrage petition her family were living in George St, Dunedin.

William died in Dunedin in 1913 and Sarah died at her daughter’s home in Invercargill on 24 March 24 1932.

They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
