Sarah Cecilia Sutton was born in 1853 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Oliver Sutton, a joiner, and Sarah Taylor.

She came to Otago with her family arriving at Port Chalmers in July 1854 on the Clutha, the family settled in Dunedin.

Sarah’s father died in 1860 and she married Conrad Basan in 1877.

They lived, at first, in Port Chalmers and were to have nine children.

When Sarah signed the suffrage petition they were living in Brook St, Dunedin.

Conrad died in 1909 and Sarah died on 27 December 1933, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
