Sarah Duck was born in Dumtree, Co Armagh, Ireland in 1821. The next time she appears in the public record is on the occasion of her marriage at the age of 21 to Atkinson Crockett in 1842.
Sarah and Atkinson had eight children, the last one being born in New Zealand in 1865. They were long-time residents of Mt Eden, where Atkinson worked as a poundkeeper, someone who rounded up stray livestock. Sarah and Atkinson’s youngest son, also called Atkinson, gave them trouble as a teenager as he frequently misbehaved and was charged with several small crimes.
Sarah was widowed in 1890 and died herself in 1907, at the age of 83.
