Sarah Scott Dickson was born on 4 May 1844 in Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Andrew Dickson, a ploughman, and Jean McRae.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in the 1850s and they settled at East Taieri.

Sarah married Anthony Grant, a grocer, in the East Taieri Parish on 15 July 1864 and they had eight children.

When Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Anderston Rd, Roslyn, Dunedin.

Sarah died on 8 November 1903 and Anthony died in 1921, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
