Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash, Archives New Zealand, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Selina Gregg was born in 1837 in Leominster, Herefordshire, the eldest daughter of James Gregg, a farmer, and his wife Sarah. She attended school until she was at least 13.

At the age of about 25 in 1862, she married Alfred Beaven, and they departed shortly after for New Zealand. They landed in Bluff and purchased a farm at Waianiwa, which they named 'Brooklyn'. Alfred and Selina had one son, Arthur.

The couple were active in their community and especially the temperance movement. Alfred was the secretary of the Wallacetown Gospel Temperance Society, and Selina was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.
