Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Selina was the wife of surgeon Thomas Pemberton and mother to Sydney Lincoln Pemberton, Frank Augustine Pemberton, and Betram Victor Pemberton. Sadly, she outlived two of her sons, who died a year apart when they were 22 and 27 respectively.

Selina’s husband Thomas was born in Birmingham, England but practised surgery in England, South Africa and New Zealand. He died aged 43 in Wellington, New Zealand in 1887. Selina must have moved to Christchurch following his death and signed the Petition as a widow.

Selina died on 3 November 1916, aged 79, and is buried alongside Frank and Sydney in Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch.

Interestingly, a Mrs Pemberton signed Sheet 199 with near-identical handwriting.
