Susanna Marks was born in 1861 in New Zealand the daughter of Captain Hannibal Marks and Mary Jane Vercoe.
She married photographer Charles Clayton on 11 May 1886 at the Pitt St Wesleyan Church in Auckland.
They had four children, one who died in infancy while they were living in Wellington.
They later moved to Gore where Susanna signed the suffrage petition and where they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1936.
Susanna died on 31 January 1943, probably at Orokonui Home at Waitati, north of Dunedin – she is buried in the Waitati Cemetery.
Charles died later that year on 27 September – he is buried in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
