Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Theresa Hurrell was born in Essex, England in 1859 – the daughter of James Hurrell, a railway plate layer, and Rhoda King. (See 34 Mrs Hurrell)

She emigrated to Otago on the Waimea with her family in 1875 and they settled in Dunedin.

She married Alfred Crosswell, a brickmaker, in 1886 and they had five children.

When Theresa signed the suffrage she was living in Josephine St, Caversham with her family.

One of their sons died at the age of 13 and another son died in 1918 fighting 'somewhere in France'.

Theresa died at her daughter’s home in Oamaru on 25 July 1938 and Alfred died in 1960, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
