linwood

Large working-class and lower middle-class eastern suburb. Linwood was one of the independent boroughs that in 1903 became part of Christchurch City. Linwood Avenue was the line of a planned canal between the estuary and the Avon River, but this was never built.

Meaning of place name
William Guise Brittan and his brother Joseph emigrated from Sherbourne in Dorsetshire, England. William named his property Englefield, from the name of his residence in England: for the same reason Joseph called his, which was some distance down the Avon River, Linwood.
