Pioneering aviator Vivian Walsh took to the skies over South Auckland for the first successful flight in New Zealand.

Town on the shores of the Pahurehure inlet of the Manukau harbour, 34 km south of Auckland city. An early frontier settlement, Papakura now marks the southern suburban fringe of greater Auckland and the gateway to the rural south. The Papakura Military Camp was established on the outskirts of the town in 1939.
Meaning of place name
Papa: flat; kura: red. The soil in the district is characteristically red in colour.
