United Tribes flag from Te Papa

Riria Hotere discusses the United Tribes flag held in the Te Papa collection. This particular flag came to New Zealand with the New Zealand Company in 1839 and first flew over Wellington Harbour (Port Nicholson).

After the Union Jack became our official flag in 1840, Lieutenant-Governor William Hobson forced the New Zealand Company to take down this flag at Port Nicholson.
