Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Florence Stubbs was born in 1872 in Beeston, Yorkshire, England – the daughter of Francis Stubbs, a brass founder, and Mary Ann Pennock. Florence came to Otago with her mother and siblings in 1887 on the Ruapehu. Her father had arrived earlier. Her sister Lavinia also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
She married John Charles Brighting, a plumber, in 1892. They had no children but adopted a son who had been born in about 1896. Florence was active in the Lancashire and Yorkshire Association, serving on the committee and performing songs at their concerts.
John died in 1935 and Florence died on 19 July 1965, and they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
