Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Jane Connelly was born about 1836 in St Hellier, Jersey – the daughter of Francois Connelly, a shoemaker, and Mary Susan De St Croix.

She married Francis Helleur, a seaman, on 2 February 1858 at St Hellier and they had two daughters.

Francis appears to have died in the late 1860s and Mary re-married on 26 October 1873 in St Saviour, Jersey, to Nathan Walter Moyse, a coach builder.

Mary and Nathan, accompanied by her two daughters, emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Scimitar and they settled in Dunedin.

Nathan died in 1886 and when Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her daughter Augusta (See 172 A F Helleurs)  in Forth St, Dunedin.

She died at her home on 5 May 1925 and is buried with Nathan in the Northern Cemetery.
